This philosophy is one of respect for the extraordinary capabilities harnessed within the whole plant. As a result, we utilize an infusion process, which maintains the powerful synergies that naturally occur within the hemp plant. We use these full spectrum oils to formulate our products.

As the awareness surrounding hemp-infused topicals and all of their benefits continues to rise, more and more people are curious enough to give it a try. The cannabis plant boasts an impressive and extensive list of healing properties, but for those who don’t want products with THC in them, hemp-infused topicals can also provide many benefits — especially for athletes.

If you consider yourself an athlete or just enjoy playing sports and engaging in physical activities, we are willing to bet you suffer from your fair share of aches, pains, and injuries. After all, whether you enjoy mountain biking, skiing, or tennis, you are stretching your physical limits.

Almost every athlete is all too familiar with broken bones, bruises, aches, and sprains. And there are many medical products on the market for such discomforts and issues. You are familiar with traditional creams and pills readily available to treat your ailments, but hemp-infused topicals are quickly rising in prominence — and for good reason!

Mary Jane’s Botanicals delves into the perks of hemp-infused topicals for athletes.

Reasons Athletes Should Consider Using Hemp-Infused Topicals

We get it, there is a stigma associated with the use of cannabis in any form. It can be especially troubling for athletes. You might also be skeptical about their ability to treat sports-related injuries. But once you have a firm grasp of how topicals work — and especially those that come from hemp, you will find them a viable option.

Take a look in your medicine cabinet, in all likelihood, it is full of medicines used to treat localized pain and other symptoms. You might know a little about most of these products and there are even a few that work, but they are typically jam-packed with chemicals and may have unwanted side effects.

Hemp-infused topicals effectively replace many of these pills and creams you have in your medicine cabinet because they promote healing and pain relief naturally.

Long-Term Benefits

Pain and injury are more than just an occasional problem that athletes must deal with, they are more of a side effect of playing sports. As such, you will want a treatment that alleviates the pain and protects against future harm while being gentle on your system. Hemp-infused topicals offer long-lasting therapeutic benefits that also safeguard your body.

No Unwanted Side Effects

While you are recovering from a sports-related injury, the last thing you want to deal with is unwanted side effects. Lucky for you, hemp-infused topicals offer pain relief without any adverse side effects. Hemp is a type of cannabis plant that contains no more than a minuscule (if any) amount of THC. What it does contain, however, is dozens of beneficial compounds like CBD and other cannabinoids, as well as terpenes and flavonoids. That means you can get all of the healing benefits that come from cannabis without having to worry about THC in your bloodstream. You can even apply these products before a workout as a preventative measure.

Localized Treatment

Whether you hurt your knee or shoulder, you want pain relief that targets that specific area. If you take a pill for the pain, you are not managing the area of your body that hurts. Instead, you are ingesting medicine that will have an impact on your entire body.

Hemp-infused topicals are a wonderful way to focus on the areas of your body that you want to treat. This is the best way to get rapid relief where you need it most.

If you have any questions about hemp-infused topicals, or would like to try some for yourself, visit Mary Jane’s Botanicals.

This philosophy is one of respect for the extraordinary capabilities harnessed within the whole plant. As a result, we utilize an infusion process, which maintains the powerful synergies that naturally occur within the hemp plant. We use these full spectrum oils to formulate our products.

Hemp topicals are products that can be applied to the body or skin to control or treat a skin condition, supply local pain relief, speed the healing of injuries, or simply to improve the condition of your skin. Our topicals are useful for all types of people who desire localized relief from aches and pains without the psychoactive, heady effects of ingesting or smoking the flower.

Because our topicals are made with hemp, they’re guaranteed to have just a trace (if any at all) of THC. According to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is defined as cannabis that has no more than 0.3% THC and therefore it’s approved for use in all kinds of products.

Hemp topicals come in a variety of forms including salves and tinctures. Choosing the desired application is up to you. Mary Jane’s Botanicalls offers this set of best practices when applying the hemp-infused topical of your choice.

Have Realistic Expectations

Hemp-infused topicals are quite helpful for a wide variety of ailments because the cannabinoids found in the plant stimulate your body’s ability to heal itself. However, every person has a unique endocannabinoid system which means everybody will react to it differently.

You may find that a topical is very effective for treating one thing but not as effective for treating another. That is why we like to say “Just put some salve on it.” because we have found it to be effective for a very wide array of ailments, and it is worth giving it a try to see if it will help. Hemp is known to have powerful effects, so an infused topical can be quite effective for relieving inflammatory issues such as arthritis.

Don’t Be Stingy

Sometimes just a little dab will do ya, but other times you may find you need to repeat application a few times throughout the day. For healing injuries we recommend several applications a day throughout the healing process. For pain relief start with a small amount and increase as needed. You can apply as much as you like. You can’t really overdo it with a topical. So feel free to apply liberally to affected areas, or all over your body for a calming effect.

Where To Apply Your Topical

This can be as simple as applying the topical on the area where you are suffering the pain. If your knee hurts, apply the topical to your knee.

However, you might have a headache caused by a pain in your neck. In this case, you would apply the topical to your neck and not your head, where the pain is located.

If you aren’t suffering any immediate pain, you can apply the topical to those common areas where people experience frequent stress including the neck, feet, wrists and shoulders. This can promote a sense of calm or relief.

Cannabis and wellness are finding themselves mentioned in the same conversations more and more these days, and with the last couple of years seeing a boom in the kind of exciting research that is bringing cannabis ever-closer to true medical applications, it’s no wonder why. And even withstanding the wealth of new research available, anecdotal evidence is strongly suggestive of the power that individual people believe cannabis and cannabis products — like hemp-infused salves — offer them.

At Mary Jane’s Botanicals, we produce small-batch organic hemp topicals to provide relief and healing for everything from irritation of dry and itchy skin to chronic pain. In today’s blog, we will focus on the applications for pain relief that cannabis has to offer by highlighting some of the uses of our hemp-infused salve.

As a point of clarification, although Mary Jane’s Botanicals are derived from cannabis, they are actually from the hemp plant — cannabis in which the psychoactive compound THC has been removed. If you’re looking for a natural product that contains all of the therapeutic benefits of the cannabis plant without THC, shop Mary Jane’s Botanicals.

For chronic pain that is worsening, new, or that you have not already sought professional medical attention for, we always recommend a visit to your primary care physician to discuss your options and learn more about your condition.

For Joint Pain

When it comes to chronic pain, or even just temporary pain, joint pain is a common culprit that affects millions of people in the United States alone. Now, there are lots of different reasons that someone may suffer from joint pain, including:

Bursitis

Lupus

Arthritis

Scar tissue

Tendinitis

Gout

Overuse

Rickets

Depression

And more

You might be surprised to learn that arthritis alone may cause pain and stiffness for as much as 23% of the adult population, according to a study by the Centers for Disease control.

However, whatever the reasons are that you or someone you know may suffer from joint pain, the root of this stiff, aching condition often can be traced to one primary symptom of your condition: inflammation.

Inflammation from overuse, swollen, overactive glands, a previous injury, or even as a chemically induced reaction to brain chemistry as a result of something like depression or disease can cause pain sporadically, or on a chronic basis.

Numerous studies have indicated that the properties of cannabis may be one of the most promising medical applications, with chronic pain being one of the greatest areas of opportunity. As that 2016 study of Medicare Part D suggests, people using cannabis products to treat their chronic pain were less likely to continue using traditional prescription painkillers and medications, causing a shift in the application of the program in regards to chronic pain treatment.

Hemp-infused topicals, like the Full-Spectrum Hemp Salve from Mary Jane’s Botanicals, are a great way to provide fast, localized relief and reduce inflammation for joint pain from most conditions.

For Muscle Pain

Muscle pain, like joint pain, can be caused by a plethora of different reasons ranging from minor injuries to more serious conditions like inflammatory myopathies. However, the properties inherent in hemp-infused topicals would suggest that it’s a good option for helping to find some relief from pain caused by injured or inflamed muscles.

The characteristics of our full-spectrum Hemp-Infused Salve allow for localized relief for muscle and joint aches and pains, but there’s more to it than that. We know that cannabis products interact with, and help to regulate, the Endocannabinoid System — a part of your body that helps to manage and maintain healthy homeostasis, the immune system’s response, memory, and more — and can influence healing and a sense of wellbeing that many people find incredibly powerful.

To Help Relax You For Bed

Speaking of the many functions of the Endocannabinoid System, how have you been sleeping lately? As one of the primary factors of a healthy and productive day, week, and life, sleep is something that we simply cannot get by without. However, according to the Cleveland Clinic, as many as 70 million Americans suffer from one kind of sleep disorder or another. While there are many different kinds of sleep disorders, insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy are typically thought to be the most pervasive and detrimental.

Besides medically recognized conditions like those mentioned above, however, many more people also report that they sleep poorly for reasons ranging from lucid dreaming to a partner’s snoring to general discomfort due to aches and pains or worry from anxiety.

While cannabis isn’t the be-all-end-all of sleep solutions by any stretch of the imagination, there is good reason to believe that it can help in many of these situations. For example, we know that the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) helps to regulate sleep, and we know that cannabis and hemp products, like our Hemp-Infused Salve, help to regulate the ECS.

From an aches and pains standpoint, the properties of hemp-infused topicals are well known and widely accepted, and salves and lotions of this nature can help you to not only experience relief from pain, but they can also help to provide relaxation in general.

There is even promise and hope for those who find that their anxiety keeps them up, or wakes them up, at night as one study found that both anxiety and sleep may be improved by an application of CBD — one of the primary compounds in our hemp salve.

To Treat Painful, Cracked Heels

Many of the ingredients in our Hemp-Infused Salve also lend themselves to providing healing and moisturizing for cracked heels — something that many people in arid states, like Colorado, deal with.

The avocado oil on our Hemp-Infused Salve promotes skin cell growth and regeneration and is abundant in vitamins A and E, both of which are used by many people to treat dry, cracked skin. At the same time, Jojoba oil is well known for its ability to rapidly and deeply penetrate the skin and provide skin-softening moisture. The base of beeswax that is used in our salve gives it enough body to work gently into the cracks and penetrate deeply without being absorbed into your socks or footwear.

Anyone who has dealt with cracked heels in the past knows that they can be quite painful, and sometimes when you are starting to treat them and soften your skin, the pain can become worse for short durations as the not-fully-healed cracks have more pressure placed on them. That’s where the full-spectrum hemp infusion in our salve comes into play — giving you all pain-relieving benefits of CBD and all of the other cannabinoids.

To Treat Dry, Itchy Skin

In Colorado, where Mary Jane’s Medicinals is based, we all battle to some degree with dry skin given the cold winters, an abundance of sunshine, and the generally arid climate statewide, and this is one of our favorite hemp-infused topicals for addressing such issues.

However, we have also heard from our clients that this salve has been successful in helping to reduce the inflammation and itchiness of conditions like Psoriasis and Rosacea, and while these are only anecdotal pieces of evidence, we trust our customers enough to recommend that hemp-infused topicals might be worth talking to your doctor about if you suffer from these conditions.

This philosophy is one of respect for the extraordinary capabilities harnessed within the whole plant. As a result, we utilize an infusion process, which maintains the powerful synergies that naturally occur within the hemp plant. We use these full spectrum oils to formulate our products.

At this point, there are likely a number of terms that you have come across in the cannabis lexicon that you may or may not be familiar with. At Mary Jane’s Botanicals, there are two that we get asked about with regularity: full-spectrum cannabis and the entourage effect. While these two terms have to do quite a bit with one another, they are by no means the same thing.

In today’s blog from May Jane’s Botanicalls — creator of some of Colorado’s best full-spectrum hemp-infused topicals — we will take a look at these terms, what they mean, and why it matters.

For a complete explanation of how the entourage effect works, refer to this in-depth study and report from the British Journal of Pharmacology.

Cannabinoid And Terpene Cooperation

Cannabis plants like the hemp and marijuana plants contain somewhere in the realm of 100-plus phytocannabinoids — these are naturally occurring chemical compounds found in cannabis plants that can interact with the human Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

These cannabinoids, of which THC and CBD are the most abundant and well understood, can also interact with terpenes — aromatic oils produced by plants that can alter the effects of cannabinoids on the ECS. Essential oils are largely composed of terpenes.

On their own, CBD and THC each provide different stimuli and responses to and from the ECS. In concert with various combinations of terpenes and other cannabinoids, these effects can be altered, enhanced, or diminished, and completely new effects can be born.

What Does the Term Full-Spectrum Mean?

In short, a full-spectrum cannabis product (also often referred to as full-spectrum CBD or full-spectrum THC, depending on whether it was derived from a hemp or marijuana plant) is one that contains all of the naturally occurring phytocannabinoids and terpenes. So, the cannabis flower, as an unfiltered substance, is full-spectrum.

By contrast, a CBD product derived from hemp that retains all of the naturally occurring phytocannabinoids and terpenes except for THC would be considered a full-spectrum product and a cannabis product that had been refined and filtered to only contain either THC or CBD, would be considered an isolate.

Full-spectrum cannabis or hemp topicals, edibles, and other consumables are the best way to experience the potential benefits of the entourage effect.

Are There Still Benefits To Taking THC Or CBD By Themself?

Absolutely. Both THC and CBD, even in isolate form, can provide specific benefits depending on what you are looking for. However, it is widely accepted that the best applications for either are found within full-spectrum offerings.

What is the difference between THC and CBD? While there are certainly many people who can explain this for themselves and others given the spread of the agricultural cannabis industry, there are still many Americans who are fuzzy at best about how these two chemicals are different from one another.

However, with FDA regulation and approval of a drug with CBD as an active ingredient, the continued expansion of medical cannabis and recreational cannabis across the nation on a state-by-state basis, national legislation like the 2018 Farm Bill redefining hemp, and cannabis and hemp-based products becoming more readily available, this is a more important question than ever before.

At Mary Jane’s Botanicals, we craft small-batch hemp-infused topicals of the highest quality to provide our customers with the ability to enjoy and increase their own wellness in the ways that they see fit. Today, we will help to provide a basic understanding for them, and the rest of the reader’s of this blog, regarding the fundamental differences in chemical makeup, legality, uses, and side effects of THC and CBD.

What They Have In Common

CBD and THC are both cannabinoids, and they are easily the two most thoroughly studied and deeply understood, and despite how concerned everyone is with how different these two chemicals compounds are, they do share some important similarities including that they are both derived from cannabis plants such as hemp and marijuana, they both engage and interact with your body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS) — although in quite different ways — and they have the exact same number of carbon (21), hydrogen (30), and oxygen (2) atoms. Finally, both THC and CBD can be consumed via inhalation, topical application, and through ingestion. However, this is more or less the extent to which they resemble each other.

How They Interact With The ECS

As cannabinoids, both THC and CBD interact with the human ECS to stimulate or inhibit certain cellular signals that regulate body function and homeostasis. Currently, the ECS is known to have two different varieties of cannabinoids receptors, known as CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Although these receptors are found throughout most of the human body, CB1 receptors are found abundantly in areas of the brain that control memory, emotions, and motor function, while CB2 receptors are found primarily throughout the nervous system and the immune system.

THC, the cannabinoid, is best known for its ability to produce a psychoactive state known as a “high,” interacts with both CB1 And CB2 receptors. Thus, when THC enters these receptors in combination, effects that are both physical and mental are experienced.

CBD, on the other hand, does not interact with CB1 receptors — a fact that explains its lack of ability to produce a psychoactive, or “high,” state. As a matter of fact, it seems that CBD actually can block these receptors, or at the very least interfere with them, inhibiting or altering the effects of THC and other cannabinoids.

It is important to note that THC-infused topical products such as THC lotions, salves, and bath products, typically lack sufficient penetration to enter the bloodstream and reach CB1 receptors in the brain. Instead, they attach to CB2 receptors throughout the nervous system to provide localized effects.

The Legal Question

Until just recently, both THC and CBD were on the list of controlled substances maintained by the Treasury Department, despite varying laws for their use in medical and recreational capacities existing in many states. However, in 2018, the Farm Bill passed by the U.S. Senate redefined CBD derived from hemp in a way that allowed for the cultivation, sale, and distribution in all 50 states.

The distinction of hemp-derived CBD is important, as CBD can also be harvested from marijuana plants. However, CBD is the most prominent of the cannabinoids present in hemp, while THC consists of less than .3% of its makeup. By contrast, THC is typically the most abundant cannabinoid in marijuana plants, especially in those genetically manipulated for use in the growing medical and recreational industry.

So while CBD derived from hemp is legal for purchase everywhere, and can even be transported and sold across state lines, CBD derived from marijuana plants remains illegal at the federal level.

This is because THC is legal for recreational and/or medical use in many states, but remains illegal from a federal perspective. Without providing an extensive history lesson, the ins and outs of this dichotomy of legality and illegality are a bit tricky to explain, but suffice it to say that as of 2020, the federal government has largely refrained from pursuing action against THC-based businesses and users.

The Medical Applications

Both THC and CBD provide a number of medical benefits, some of which are shared, while others are distinctly different. Oddly enough, despite research supporting these medical uses, in many states, it is illegal for a doctor to actually prescribe marijuana as a treatment due to federal oversight and regulation of the medical profession, however, they may legally recommend that you seek it out and provide you with a medical marijuana card — sometimes called a red card or green card, depending on the state — that allows you to legally purchase, possess, and consume medical cannabis.

THC, both as an isolate and as a full-spectrum product, is used in various applications to provide relief or treatment for:

Chronic pain

Muscle spasms

Insomnia

Low appetite

Nausea

Glaucoma

And anxiety

CBD, as an isolate and as a full-spectrum product, has been shown to provide uses for:

Depression

Anxiety

Pain reduction

Inflammation reduction

Certain mental disorders

Migraines

And nausea

While only CBD has been approved as an actual medical treatment for certain seizures by the FDA, continuing research into THC is furthering the case for regulation and adoption, which is likely to quickly follow legalization at the federal level, if, and when, that event comes.

The Side Effects

CBD is incredibly well tolerated by the body, even in massive doses, and is largely considered to be free of side effects in and of itself. THC produces some temporary side effects such as an increased heart rate, diminished fine motor skills, dry mouth, red eyes, and memory loss.

Created by the makers of Mary Jane’s Medicinals- one of the original producers of cannabis infused topicals in the US, Mary Jane’s Botanicals employs the same approach when working with the hemp plant. This philosophy is one of respect for the extraordinary capabilities harnessed within the whole plant. As a result, we utilize an infusion process, which maintains the powerful synergies that naturally occur within the hemp plant. We use these full spectrum oils to formulate our products.

Hemp-infused products are an excellent way to find topical relief for pain and inflammation right at their source. However, the type of topical agent that you use can matter. Lotions are excellent for penetrating superficial tissue and providing nourishing, restorative, and hydrating effects for your skin and minor skin conditions, while salves do a better job of providing deeper penetration over time and creating a nonpermeable barrier against wind, liquid, and other skin irritants.

In the case of hemp-infused salves, they also do a great job of holding in all of the healing properties you are looking for to promote wellness and reduce inflammation and pain.

In today’s blog, we’ll take a close look at five kinds of people who we think might find relief from using hemp-infused salves to treat pain. To learn more about our hemp-infused salve and to try it for yourself, visit our online product page.

People Who Work a Desk Job

Desk jobs are tough on your neck, shoulders, spine, and if you do a lot of typing during your day, your wrists and hands, as well. The results of sitting and/or typing all day can leave you feeling exhausted, worn down, and struggling to maintain a comfortable normal posture or strong grip.

The CBD and other cannabinoids inhemp is known to reduce inflammation and help relieve pain by regulating the nervous system via your ECS — or endocannabinoid system. As such, hemp-infused salves are an excellent way to restore a sense of wellness while addressing superficial pain caused by your workplace posture.

People Who Suffer From Arthritis Pain

Due to its properties, CBD and other cannabinoids are also commonly used to treat arthritis pain. A study from the journal Pain in 2017 found that cannabinoids were effective at reducing inflammation and protecting nerves in many different cases of osteoarthritis, suggesting that full-spectrum hemp-infused salves should be strongly considered by those seeking relief.

People Who Struggle With Plantar Fasciitis

For the exact same reasons, hemp-infused salves are an excellent way to provide relief for people who struggle with soft tissue pain from conditions like plantar fasciitis. A hemp-infused salve also has the added benefit of providing protection to cracked and dry feet, for a one-two wellness punch. Applying our salve to sore or tired feet after a long day is also a great idea for soothing discomfort and promoting relaxation.

People Who Experience Joint Pain From Overuse Activities

In an earlier example, we cited how CBD can provide pain relief for overuse conditions like pain from too much typing and consistently poor posture, so it stands to reason that cannabinoid-rich hemp salves would be effective for other types of pain caused by overuse, or repetition, injury, making them an excellent choice for athletes.

Anyone Seeking Relief Through A Natural and Homeopathic Product

Hemp-infused salves also fall into line with the values of homeopathic medicine in that they provide natural, wellness-promoting ingredients that are intended to stimulate the body’s own ability to heal and take care of itself.

Find Hemp-Infused Products From Mary Jane’s Botanicals
